Asylum: Inside the Closed World of State Mental Hospitals

Christopher Payne, M.Arch. (Christopher Payne Photography, Brooklyn, New York) visited and photographed 70 state mental hospitals in 30 states from 2002-2008. This presentation displayed and described these photographs and included a brief history of care for the mentally disabled in the United States. Specific buildings, such as the Dr. Thomas Story Kirkbride building, were featured along with narratives depicting healing via building and places which are removed from society, safe, and self sustaining. Included in this discussion are remarks on "moral treatment," segregation, and deinstitutionalization of residents. Richard L.
