Lure = Córki Dancingu

Loading...
Follow a pair of carnivorous mermaid sisters drawn ashore to explore life on land in an alternate 1980s Poland. Their tantalizing siren songs and otherworldly auras make them overnight sensations as nightclub singers in the half-glam, half-decrepit world of Smoczynska's imagining. The director gives fierce teeth to her viscerally sensual, darkly feminist twist on Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid", in which the girls' bond is tested and their survival threatened after one sister falls for a human.

A Film Unfinished

This potent documentary uses a long-lost film reel to illustrate how the Nazis controlled and manipulated images of Jewish life during World War II. Though the Nazis made a propaganda movie of contented Jews in the Warsaw ghetto, the missing spool exposes the truth. Director Yael Hersonski shows how the imagery was staged to distort historical knowledge and, with the aid of Jewish survivors' testimony, chronicles the horrifying reality of ghetto life.

A Film Unfinished: Shtikat Haarchion

Loading...
At the end of WWII, 60 minutes of raw film in an East German archive was discovered. Shot by the Nazis in Warsaw in May of 1942, the film became a resource for historians seeking an authentic record of the Warsaw Ghetto. The later discovery of a long-missing reel, including multiple takes and cameramen staging scenes, complicated earlier readings of the footage. Presented is the raw footage in its entirety, falsely showing the 'good life' of Jewish urbanites. Included is an interview, and more.

Battle for Warsaw '44

Loading...
The Warsaw Uprising was the largest and bloodiest military operation undertaken by any resistance movement in World War II. From August 1 - October 2, 1944 the Nazis were challenged by an underground army of irregular volunteers - the vast majority barely adult. They counted on help from the Allies but this did not come. 200,000 people, one-third of Warsaw s population perished, 15,000 resistance fighters were taken prisoner-of-war, and 80% of Warsaw was destroyed. Battle for Warsaw 44 contains unique testimony from Polish, British, and German participants. The film tells the story of a young girl coming of age under extreme circumstances: Nina falls in love, goes to parties, and graduates high school - all in the Warsaw ghetto. One could say that, in these horrid times, she is almost living the life of a normal teenager. If it wasn't for the fact that all those around her are vanishing, one by one. Nina's Journey is shot in Warsaw, with Polish actors. But it is narrated by the elderly Nina Einhorn herself.
