We of the Never Never

Loading...
This dramatization of a famous Australian novel presents an idyllic year in the life of a young woman. Jeannie Taylor marries Aeneas Gunn in 1901, and accompanies him to the Elsey Station near Mataranka, Northern Territory, 300 miles south of Darwin, where he is manager. In Memory of Mawalan (1983); In Memory of Mawalan

Loading...
In 1971 Wandjuk Marika organised a Djangkawu ceremony at Yirrkala in memory of his father, Mawalan who died in 1967. Mawalan had been the highly respected head of the Rirratjingu clan for whom the Djangkawu are primary creator ancestors. In his commentary Wandjuk has made explicit only outside or public interpretations of this ceremony. Throughout the ceremony, great importance is given to teaching the Djangkawu Law to the young people. For the Yolngu of Yirrkala, in 1971, the reaffirmation of their law was more important than ever: they had just lost their historic land rights case.
