Jordan [electronic resource]: Home Away From Home

The people who are building and managing it insist it's a temporary, emergency shelter. The people living in it are creating neighborhoods, commercial and retail centers, education precincts and function centers. To call Zaatari a refugee camp would be to deny its vibrancy and complexity. Residents want to return to Syria, but until their war-ravaged nation becomes safe again, this desert community has become their home away from home.

Exile Without End [electronic resource]: Palestinians in Lebanon

Shatila is a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon where hundreds were killed in a 1982 massacre. This program is a unique immersive experience that takes you into one of the world's oldest refugee camps, through its overcrowded streets and alleyways, in search of the people who have been living there for over 60 years. You'll meet children politicized from infancy playing war games in the back yard; Fatima, whose son spends his meager allowance helping his brothers and sisters; and old Tawil, who lived through the 1948 exodus and is frantically looking for the key he misplaced to his house in Palestine. Step into the daily lives of all these people, left stateless by the nakba (catastrophe) that consigned an entire people to forced idleness and oblivion.

Scheherazade's Diary

Loading...
"This engaging tragicomic documentary follows women inmates through a 10-month drama therapy/theater project set up in 2012 by director Zeina Daccache at the Baabda Prison in Lebanon. Through their unprecedented theater initiative, entitled Scheherazade in Baabda, these "murderers of husbands, adulterers and drug felons" reveal their stories--tales of domestic violence, traumatic childhoods, failed marriages, forlorn romances, and deprivation of motherhood. The women of Baabda Prison share their personal stories, and in doing so, hold up a mirror to Lebanese society and all societies that repress women." --Human Rights Watch Film Festival.

I Want to See: Je Veux Voir

"While visiting Beirut to attend a glamorous gala, iconic French actress Catherine Deneuve insists :Je veux voir" ("I want to see"), referring to the carnage wrought against innocent Lebanese civilians during Israel's attack on Lebanon in the summer of 2006. Filmmakers Khalil Joreige and Joana Hadjithomas know first-hand the devastation Deneuve and chauffeur-actor Rabih Mroué will witness. They arrange a meeting between the two actors-captured on camera-before they embark together on a surprisingly gorgeous two-hour drive to southern Lebanon, returning in time for her appointed engagement. The simplicity of the plot is in stark contrast with the ravaged landscape seen through the car window. I Want to See is [...]

Lebanon's Cluster Bombs [electronic resource]: Remnants of a War

The war never ended for the Lebanese Cluster Bomb Removal Team, who hunt tirelessly for the hundreds of thousands of unexploded cluster munitions rained down upon their country by the Israeli militia in 2006. It's estimated that nearly 30% of the poorly-made bombs failed to detonate, so each one the team discovers could mean instant death - or one more life saved. This documentary follows the team in their search for hidden cluster munitions, capturing their camaraderie as they laugh about the extreme risks and explain why they signed up for such a dangerous job.

Bufor

Lebanon in the year 2000. Not far from the old seafarer''s fortress, Beaufort, is a military base with the same name kept by the Israeli army. This heavily guarded post has been here since the war in Lebanon in 1982. It is a symbol not only of Israel''s most controversial campaign for military control of Lebanon, but also of a sacrificial struggle during which many soldiers lost their lives. The Israeli troops move out of Lebanon, leaving behind their base at Beaufort. On the evening of May 24th, the base is destroyed, blown up by thousands of mines. The powerful explosion marks the end of 18 years of Israeli occupation. The film tells the story of Liraz Liberti, the 22-year-old commander of Beaufort, and his troops during the last few months prior to their withdrawal. The story does [...]
