Following two failed offenses on Jerusalem (the First and Second Battle of Gaza) in 1917, General Edward Allenby assumed command of British forces in the Middle East. Known as a brilliant military strategist, Allenby began his assault on the Turkish army stationed in Jerusalem on October 31, 1917. After conquering Jerusalem on December 7, Allenby was forced to send many of his troops to the Western Front, though he continued to participate in raids against the Turkish army and their transportation lines.
