Unable to pay his debts incurred in winning support for his bid for election as burgomaster, Mathias, an Alsatian innkeeper, murders a rich Jewish traveler from Poland and steals his gold. Mathias is not suspected of the crime, but he is tormented by the sound of the bells that rang as his victim lay dying and visions of the dead man and his own hands covered in blood. In spiritual agony, he dies with his secret unconfessed.

Divided into 10 days, the story focuses on the wealthy Van Horns. Orson Welles plays the eccentric tycoon who lives in an Alsatian chateau with his young wife and his adopted son, a sculptor given to hallucinatory fits that cause him to fear he has unknowingly committed murder. Of course, wife and son are having a passionate affair and being blackmailed, which sets in dizzying motion the complex plot.
