A Viagem de Yoani =: Yoani's Trip

Loading...
The Cuban blogger Yoani Sánchez built her first computer and created a blog even though she did not have Internet access at home. Today, she receives millions of visitors per month. Reporting on her daily life in Cuba and harshly criticizing socialism, Yoani gained fame and international awards. Some say she is a CIA agent, while others believe she fights for freedom of expression. For the first time since the Cuban Revolution of 1959 and thanks to the migration reform of 2013, Cubans have the opportunity to travel abroad and come back without the government's permission. Yoani was one of the first to make such a trip. Her tour started in Brazil, where she met politicians, activists, students, and the press.

Aquele Querido Mês de Agosto: Our Beloved Month of August

Despite a complete lack of financing and cast, driven young director Miguel Gomes is hell-bent on making a film and dives headlong into a cinematic kaleidoscope. With a camera and a small crew, Gomes travels to a remote Portuguese mountainside, where the Pardieiros music festival is under way, and begins filming the townsfolk. While the festival sets one's eyes ablaze and toes tapping, Gomes finds a narrative slowly and sneakily emerging. Locations, songs, and characters from the documentary are recast as echoes of their former selves. Townspeople are reincarnated as members of a family band and incestuous subplots unfold. These colliding realities beg the question: Is the beginning of the film merely research for following fiction? Is truth a rehearsal for fiction here, or is it th [...]

Atlantico Negro: Na Rota Dos Orixás = Black Atlantic : On the Orixás Route

Loading...
"The waters of the Atlantic brought the slaves from Africa to Brazil, their bodies in chains but their souls still tied to mother Africa. This Brazilian-made film takes us to both shores, to how spiritual life, dance and song came with the captive people and took root in the new soil. Among the many traditions were the language and gods of Yoruba and Jejes from the Republic of Benin. Today, when Brazilians revisit Africa, they teach the Africans the culture that these descendants of slaves keep alive in Brazil. The documentary is a testimony to some of the ironies of the diaspora"--Container.

Condor

In the mid-1970's, right-wing military dictatorships gained political power in much of South America. With the military and financial support of the United States, they put together a special intelligence unit to help put down leftist resistance groups that were growing among the disenchanted citizens in their countries. Known as Operation: Condor, this organization was soon masterminding political assassinations, kidnappings, and other terrorist acts in the name of supporting democracy at any cost. Using rare newsreel footage of political unrest in South America and interviews with those involved in Operation: Condor, Roberto Mader follows the birth of the operation, documents some of its more heinous actions, and attempts to determine who was responsible within the organization.
