Pokai͡anie: Repentance

Loading...
In a small, somewhat surreal Russian village, a mysterious woman is put on trial for repeatedly digging up the body of Varlam, the town's recently deceased ruler. The trial progresses, and it's learned that the woman's parents perished under Varlam's vicious, despotic reign of terror - along with many other innocents. As her ghastly revelations gradually reveal the truth about Varlam's monstrous inhumanity, the movie is transformed into a searing exposé of the brutal repressions, and heroic sacrifices, of the Soviet Union's mystery-shrouded Stalinist era.

Three generations of women--ninety something grandmother Eka, her middle-aged daughter Marina, and twentyish, multilingual, well-educated, lively granddaughter Ada--share a rundown flat in T'bilisi, the capital city of the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. Eka is always certain of herself. Marina is never satisfied. Ada is fed up and trapped. Theirs is an accidental matriarchy, as Eka's beloved only son, the titular Otar, is in France. A trained doctor, he sends money home from his menial jobs as an undocumented laborer. Eka lives for his occasional letters and telephone calls, so when he is killed in an accident, Marina and Ada weave an intricate web of deception to spare the old woman from heartbreak. Brigands, Chapitre VII

Loading...
This crazy, satirical epic humorously portrays several eras in European history. Though the costumes and regimes change, the film suggests, the human motives of lust and greed remain the same. Jumping back and forth in time, the film condemns its characters to an eternity of irony. In one section, a medieval king named Vano, who has a penchant for exotic torture techniques, executes his wife for being unfaithful. Seamlessly the film flashes forward to the early 1930s, with another Vano, played by the same actor, portraying a low-down thief who suddenly seizes power. Intercut with all of this is the story of a contemporary Vano, a hapless drunk who wanders across the underworlds of Europe.
