Dance for the Camera: Magnetic North

Loading...
One of a series of dance pieces created specially for television: children skating. Adolescent rituals are played out in the wintry landscapes of Northern Finland. A teenage girl skates on a frozen lake, while a teenage boy poses with a guitar in his room. Moving between the city and the wilderness, Magnetic North weaves a pattern of imagined 'calls and answerings' between its characters, across distances, through sound and movement. Between the solitary skating girls in the great outdoors, and the solitary guitar-boys in the dingy indoors, this magnetic northern landscape evokes an enigmatic world of adolescent fantasy, yearning, and imagination.

In the North: Talam

This journey starts out in Lapland, where we learn about the joik, an ancient form of expression which still holds a magic function. Rather than being sung for an audience, it serves to conjure up people or things. Through a narrow inlet, we reach Finland where the entire countryside is imbued with the Kalevala and its myths. Here one can still hear the echoes of curses and incantations present in the ancient melodies, and the magic sounds of the kantele. We feature bands that have become famous abroad, such as Frifot, Väsen and JPP, whose music reflects their country's tradition. There are also interesting personal accounts and stories, among them some biting statements from the famous novelist, Arto Paasilinna.
