Good Bye Dragon Inn
It is a night of torrential rain, and the roof of the Fun-Ho Grand Theater in Taipei is leaking. The movie showing--King Hu's lush 1966 swordplay classic "Dragon Inn"--Is the theaters last-ever screening. Once a beacon for a city of moviegoers, the theater has become a haven for hustlers, tired old men, lonely employees, and possibly even ghosts. A gloomy-looking young Japanese man wanders in and finds his concentration disrupted by various annoyances: a boy munching popcorn, a woman in heavy makeup cracking sunflower seeds, a pair of bare feet sticking over the seat next to him. The ticket taker, the washroom attendant, and the projectionist silently perform their tasks, in this poetic and elegiac exposition on longing, synchronicity, nostalgia, and the death of cinema.
