It follows the journey of one father's search through the Ottoman Empire for his two daughters after they are separated during the 1915 Armenian Genocide. Forced from his home in Mardin, Nazareth gets word that his daughters may still be alive and he travels the globe in search for them. Over the years, his odyssey takes him from the Mesopotamian deserts to Havana and finally to the barren prairies of North Dakota.

In a remote, isolated village in post-Soviet Armenia, Hamo, a widower with a pitiful pension and three worthless sons, travels daily to his wife's grave. There he meets the lovely Nina, who is communing with her late husband. The two are penniless--she works in a local bar that is about to close down, while he has been forced to start selling his meager possessions. All seems hopelessly bleak, yet as Hamo begins to court Nina, their unexpected union revitalizes them.

A mean-spirited, self-absorbed Canadian-Armenian photograher is hired to take pictures of Armenian historical churches for a calendar. He takes his wife along as a translator, and as they traverse the sites chosen for the calendar with the Armenian guide, their relationship begins to unravel. The photographer returns to Canada with his images, but without his wife, who has gradually felt drawn to her ethnic roots and has fallen in love with the guide.
