Summary
Ultrasound is one of the most useful procedures available for monitoring the fetus' development in the uterus. With ultrasound equipment, doctors can check for defects of the head, spine, chest, and limbs; diagnose serious conditions like placenta previa or breech birth; and check to see whether the mother will have twins or triplets. An ultrasound examination may be done anytime from week 5 until delivery. An ultrasound scanner uses inaudible sound waves to show the fetus inside the mother's uterus. The sound waves bounce off solid structures in the body and are transformed into an image on a monitor screen. An ultrasound scan is considered one of the best methods for visually diagnosing a major physical defect in a growing fetus. However, though there are now no known risks involved in ultrasound exams, it is highly recommended that a pregnant mother consult her physician before undergoing one.
