[presented by] the University of Virginia Medical School
Format
Video; DVD; Online
Summary
Arthur Garson, Jr., M.D., M.P.H. (James Carroll Flippin Professor of Medical Science, Dean, School of Medicine, and Vice President, University of Virginia) provided the context for the panel discussion on health disparities. Garson highlighted data regarding race poverty; rural/inner city; women; children; elderly; special health care needs; and the uninsured to illustrate the problem. Evelyn Lewis, M.D., F.A.A.F.P. (Managed Markets Regional Medical Research Specialist, Pfizer Inc., New York, New York) presented ideas for the elimination of health disparities and what companies can do. Randy C. Axelrod, M.D. ( Senior Vice President for Health Care Management, Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Virginia, Richmond, Virginia) talked about the University and Anthem relationship and the concept of being data rich and information poor. Axelrod emphasized the problem of disparities at every level even with the insured and the need for education and understanding of the why, when, where, and how of health care. Jane H. Woods, Secretary of Health and Human Resources, Commonwealth of Virginia, Richmond Virginia, described several barriers regarding health care on the part of individual persons and service providers. Woods also discussed the value of collaboration and behavior changes needed on an individual level and illustrated with the Commonwealth of Virginia programs such as "Walk Smart" and "Snack Smart."
