Elephant People [videorecording]

a film by Tsitsi Dangarembga ; produced by Nyerai Films
Format
Video; VHS
Summary
This film discusses the difficulties of the farmers and herders who live near national parks and sanctuaries in various African countries (i.e. Zimbabwe, Kenya, South Africa). Groups of elephants leave the parks to forage and graze, thereby destroying the farmers' fields and homes in the process; family members are sometimes injured or killed, forced to give up their homes and small plots of land, relocated to areas with poor soil and little water or vegetation, or remain and try to scrape together a meager living. Some people are participating in different programs such as CAMPFIRE (Communal Areas Management Programme for Indigenous Resources) which sometimes help them regain some measure of economic power and control.
