Summary
Provides a count of nonimmigrant admissions into the United States by country of citizenship. Provides statistics on nonimmigrant admissions into the United States. Nonimmigrants are foreign nationals granted temporary admission into the US. The major purposes for which nonimmigrant admission may be authorized include temporary visits for business or pleasure, academic or vocational study, temporary employment, or to act as a representative of a foreign government or international organization, among others. The alien must have a permanent residence abroad (for most classes of admission) and qualify for the nonimmigrant classification sought. The nonimmigrant classifications include: foreign government officials, visitors for business and for pleasure, aliens in transit through the United States, treaty traders and investors, students, international representatives, temporary workers and trainees, representatives of foreign information media, exchange visitors, fiance(e)s of US citizens, intracompany transferees, NATO officials, religious workers, and some others. Most nonimmigrants can be accompanied or joined by spouses and unmarried minor (or dependent) children. Data are obtained from I-94 arrival records, and are reported by fiscal year. Note that admissions represent counts of events, ie, arrivals, not unique individuals; multiple entries of an individual on the same day are counted as one admission. Further, the majority of short-term admissions from Canada and Mexico are excluded, along with sea and air crew admissions (D1 and D2 visas). Note that, beginning in 2010, the number of I-94 admissions greatly exceeds totals reported in previous years due to a more complete count of land admissions.
