A metal label attached to the back states: "Darkfield Quebec Colony Counter, Model 3330, Volts 115, Maximum Lamp watts 40, American Optical Company, Instrument Division, Buffalo 15, N.Y. Made in U.S.A." The instrument worked by placing on the device a petri dish filled with media and inoculated with a sample. With the darkfield light on, the colonies of bacteria were counted to help determine the severity of the patient's infection.
