Parachute Wedding Dress

Off-white, made from a parachute; worn in Italy on May 26, 1945 by 1st Lieutenant Hilda Franklin of the Army Nurse Corps for her wedding to Captain Richard P. Bell Jr. of the Army Medical Corps. Both Franklin and Bell were personnel in the U.S. Army's 8th Evacuation Hospital Unit during World War II. According to Hilda's niece, Mary Mitchell, the making of the dress was a collaborated effort of 8th Evac nurses. The dress was donated to the UNiversity of Virginia by either Hilda Franklin Bell or her son James Franklin Bell.
