This instrument was owned by Dr. James E. Copeland (1845-1937) of Round Hill, Virginia. It was donated to the University of Virginia by Copeland's grandson, Edward V. Copeland, in 1971. The scarificator is stamped with the following text: Tiemann. Contained in a box with two labels. One label has the following text: Geo. Tiemann Manufacturer of Surgical Instruments and every description of Cutlery No. 63 Chatham Street New York. The second label has the following text: Dr. J.E. Copeland, Rectortwon, Va.
