Abstract
In the face of factionalism within the U.S. Democratic Party, Virginia State Senator William B. Hopkins, Jr., recalls the 1966 senatorial election primaries to illustrate that the Democratic Party will unite and defeat opponents in the upcoming 1970 gubernatorial election. In the 1966 senatorial primaries, William B. Spong, Jr., and Harry F. Byrd, Jr., ran a close race within their own party. Subsequently, William B. Spong, Jr., was able to defeat the Republican opponent. Senator Hopkins predicts that the same will be true of the 1970 gubernatorial election.
