Abstract
The Olympic torch-lighting ceremony at Capitoline Hill in Rome marks the start of the 1956 Olympic Winter Games. Clemente Micara, Italian Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church, blesses the torch, a flock of doves is released, and 1948 discus throw Olympic gold medalist Adolfo Consolini carries the torch to a second athlete to begin the torch relay from Rome to Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.
