WSLS-TV reporter Lee Garrett stands outside Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke, Va., and reads a statement issued by the local advisory board for the college. The board believes that the school is prepared to assume more autonomous control of its operations. It wrote a letter to Eugene B. Sydnor, Jr., chairman of the state board, outlining its plans for accreditation, faculty employment, curriculum, expenditures, policy, and nomenclature. The local board fears too much control by the state board would deprive the school of accreditation.
