Abstract
In February 1969, President Richard M. Nixon asked Congress to raise the national debt ceiling oby $17 billion, from $365 billion to $382 billion. United States Senator Harry F. Byrd, Jr., opposes the proposal in favor of reducing government spending in order to curb inflation. According to Senator Byrd, the debt ceiling can be a useful tool to control government spending, but if it is raised, it will result in higher inflation and taxes.
