Summary
Four separate tracks, all of which have to do with Wales, form the subject matter of this book. Each of them is here called adventure. The first recreates the incredible story of Thomas Jones, the painter who in 1782 in Naples invented modern art before retiring misunderstood at his farm in Radnorshire. The second attempts to identify the poetic gesture that formed the work and life of Dylan Thomas, the brilliant child of Swansea, the "Rimbaud Cwmdonkin Drive." The third follows in the footsteps of WG Sebald, whose book Austerlitzincludes a Welsh pan on which the images of a transfigured stay are projected in the midst of the exile he tells. The fourth and last is set in the valleys of the south, among the remains of a world that was that of the coal miners and that perfect images (due to Robert Frank or Eugene W. Smith) set in his time. Thus painting, poetry, narrative and photography, united by an identical will of grasping and truth, allow us to approach from inside this absolute west of Wales. Along the way, the book is also a reflection on the relationship between reality and fiction, the nature of memories and traces, and what the identity of a country can be.--Seuil
