"Sayler's Creek Battlefield Historical State Park was the scene of the last major battle of the Civil War in Virginia. Here on April 6, 1865, General Robert E. Lee, Commander of the armies of the Conferderate States of America, lost over 8,000 men plus valuable supplies--a defeat which led to the surrender of the army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House three days later."
