Restaurateur and opera singer Alexander Smalls was born on February 7, 1952 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Smalls attended Spartanburg High School, before earning his B.F.A. degree in opera from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in 1974, and attending the Curtis Institute of Music. He toured professionally as an opera singer with the Houston Grand Opera, performing in the opera Porgy & Bess. Smalls then founded the catering business Small Miracle in the late 1970s. Regarded as the father of Southern Revival Cooking, he launched his first restaurant, Caf� Beulah, in New York City in 1994, his second, Sweet Ophelia's in 1996, and his third, The Shoebox Caf�, in 2001. Smalls also founded a second catering business, Smalls & Co., and, in 2013, opened two more restaurants in Harlem: Minton's and The Cecil.
