Summary
Legislator and educator Robert G. Clark, Jr. was born October 3, 1928 in Ebenezer, Mississippi. He attended Holmes County Training School and received his B.A. degree from Jackson State College, in 1952, in Jackson, Mississippi; and his M. S. degree in administration and educational services from Michigan State University in 1959. He was a teacher and coach in the Holmes County public school system for fifteen years. He entered the political arena in 1966, when he was elected to a seat on the Holmes county Community Action program. Thanks to federal voter registration efforts to counter historic disenfranchisement, blacks held a majority in Holmes County, and elected Clark to the Mississippi House of Representatives in 1967. He was the first African-American elected to the Mississippi legislature since Reconstruction. He served nine terms, three as Chair of the House Education Committee and three as Speaker ProTem.
