Summary
Pastor Matthew Southall Brown, Sr. was born July 16, 1922, in Savannah, Georgia. He graduated from Cuyler-Beach High School in Savannah in 1943. He earned his B. D. degree from the American Baptist Theological Seminary in Nashville, Tennessee in 1961. He was ordained and became pastor of First Smyrna Baptist Church in Savannah in 1962. He served as pastor at Royal Missionary Baptist Church in Charleston, South Carolina for six years. In 1969, he began a thirty-five year tenure as the fourth pastor of St. John's Baptist Church in Savannah, which was founded in 1885. He was appointed chairman of a twelve-member biracial schools advisory committee in Savannah in 1970. In 2009, Brown gave the opening prayer to House of Representatives. He was invited to give a sermon at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia in 2010. Reverend Brown retired from Royal Missionary Baptist church in 2005, and was named pastor emeritus.
