Publisher John Murphy III was born on March 2, 1916 in Baltimore, Maryland into the Murphy family, publishers of the Baltimore Afro-American newspaper. Murphy, the grandson of the founder of the Afro-American, attended Temple University, earning his B.S. degree in 1937. Murphy joined the Washington Tribune, where he served as manager of the paper from 1937 until 1961. In 1974, Murphy was named chairman of the board of the Afro-American where he served for many years. Murphy remained active throughout his life in a number of organizations. He was a supporter of the arts and education, serving on the board of Baltimore School for the Arts. Murphy was honored numerous times by various organizations, including the City of Baltimore proclaiming him Citizen of the Year in 1977, and receiving the Publisher of the Year Award from the University of Washington, D.C. Murphy passed away on October 16, 2010 at age 94.
