Playwright and teacher Erma Clanton was born February 5, 1923, in Memphis, Tennessee. Clanton earned her B. S. degree from Alabama State University in 1945; her M.A. degree in theater and communication from the University of Memphis in 1969. She began her career at Melrose High School in Memphis in 1946. She taught English and speech, sponsored the high school drama club and organized several productions. In 1970, Clanton became an associate professor at the University of Memphis where she taught theater and communications. She also created her own work. Her first piece, Roots, Rhymes & Righteous Times (An Evening of Soul) (1971). She also directed Listen Children; God's Trombones; Black Pearls of the World; and Gifted & Black-On The Right Track. Clanton served as chairperson of the Evening of Soul Foundation and she was a board member of Stax/Soulsville USA at The Museum of American Soul Music in Memphis.
