Publisher Frances Murphy II was born on October 8, 1922 in Baltimore, Maryland into the Murphy family, publishers of the Baltimore Afro-American newspaper. Her grandfather founded the Afro-American newspaper. Murphy attended the University of Wisconsin and later Coppin State College, graduating with degrees in journalism and education. She then received her M.Ed. degree from Johns Hopkins University. Murphy worked at the Afro-American throughout college and graduate school. After teaching for a number of years, Murphy began working at the Afro-American while teaching journalism at Morgan State University and Howard University while. Eventually Murphy became publisher, and retired from Howard University in 1991. Murphy continued with the Afro-American for another eight years. Murphy received numerous awards, including Ebony's 100 Most Influential Black Americans and the National Congress of Black Women's Woman of the 20th Century Award. Murphy passed away November 21, 2007 at age 85.
