Summary
Nun Sister Constance Murphy was born on February 2, 1904 in Baltimore, Maryland, into the Murphy family, publishers of the Baltimore Afro-American newspaper. After earning her B.A. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1928, Murphy traveled to Europe where she felt the religious calling while watching a passion play in Germany. Returning home, she joined the Sisters of St. John the Divine in Toronto in 1936 and began teaching in a girl's school in 1938. Murphy was named administrator of the Church Home for the Aged in Toronto in 1958, a position she held until 1972. Murphy returned to school, earning her M.A. degree from the University of Michigan at age seventy-three. At ninety-four, Murphy published a book of her memoirs, Other Little Ships. A year later, she visited the Holy Land for the first time. Sister Murphy passed away on August 2, 2013 at age 109.
