Summary
College president and physicist Walter E. Massey was born on April 5, 1938 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Massey earned his B.S. degree from Morehouse College in 1958 and his Ph.D. degree from Washington University in 1966. He was a physics professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Brown University and became a dean at Brown in 1975. Massey became the director of Argonne National Laboratory in 1979 and was the first black vice president for research at Argonne between 1984 and 1991. He served as the director of the National Science Foundation before being appointed to provost and vice president for academic affairs of the University of California system in 1993. From 1995 to 2007, Massey was Morehouse College president and became president of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2010. He received over twenty honorary doctorates and belonged to several professional, civil and cultural organizations.
