Summary
Actor and director Lloyd Richards was born on June 29, 1919 in Toronto, Canada, moving to Detroit as a child. After high school, Richards enrolled in pre-law at Wayne State University. Richards fought in World War II, and returned to Detroit, becoming active in local theater and broadcasting. In the 1950s, Richards moved to New York City. In the late 1950s, friend Sidney Poitier asked Richards to direct a play, A Raisin in the Sun, by the then-unknown playwright, Lorraine Hansberry. Later, he became director of the Playwrights' Conference at the O'Neill Theater, and director of the Yale School of Drama, where he obtained his M.F.A. degree in 1980. Richards won a Tony Award in 1986 for his direction of August Wilson's Fences. Richards received numerous awards, including several honorary degrees, and was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame. Richards passed away in June 29, 2006, at age 87.
