Summary
Nonprofit executive and women's rights advocate Audrey R. Peeples was born in Chicago on May 22, 1939. For nearly thirty years, she held leadership positions with some of the country's preeminent women's rights organizations. Raised in Chicago, Peeples earned her B.A. degree in 1961 from the University of Illinois at Champagne. In 1973, she became associate regional director for Girl Scouts USA and, in 1976, rose to executive director of the Girl Scouts of Chicago. In September 1987, Peeples left the Girl Scouts to become CEO of the Young Women's Christian Association. Under her leadership, the YWCA expanded its budget and its program offerings, with new initiatives in childcare and women's health. Serving on many community boards in Chicago, Peeples was active in shaping public policy and striving for racial equality. She raised two children. Her husband of twenty-nine years, Anthony Peeples, passed away in 2001.
