Football player and business executive Mel Farr, Sr. was born in Beaumont, Texas in 1944. Farr was widely recruited from Hebert High School. He enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles, but was drafted by the Detroit Lions before he completed his studies. While playing for the Lions, Farr attended the University of Detroit, where he earned his degree. At UCLA, Farr was a consensus All-American from 1963 to 1967. He was also NFL Rookie of the Year in 1967 with the Detroit Lions, and an All-Pro in 1967 and 1972. Plagued by injuries, Farr retired from football in 1973 and pursued an interest in business. After completing Ford Motor's Minority Dealer Development Program, in 1975, Farr opened his own dealership in Oak Park, Michigan. By 1998, it was the top African American business in the country grossing $596.6-million. Mel Farr. Farr passed away on August 3, 2015 at age 70.
