Summary
Journalist and political organizer Lutrelle "Lu" Palmer was born March 28, 1922 in Newport News, Virginia. He received his B.A. degree in journalism from Virginia Union University in 1942 and his M.S. degree from Syracuse University in 1948. Arriving in Chicago in 1950, he became a reporter for the Chicago Defender. A syndicated columnist and editor, his columns appeared in the Nashville-based Tri-State Defender. He also hosted a radio show featuring political commentaries, and founded the Black X-Press Info-Paper in Chicago. Palmer was a recruiter, organizer, and preceptor for the Associated Colleges of the Midwest from 1970 to 1990. He created the Chicago Black United Communities in 1979 and the Black Independent Political Organization to register voters, offer political education classes, and slate black candidates. He was chairman of the Extended Services Program for the Group Living Facilities for Boys in 1998. Palmer passed away on September 12, 2004, at the age of 82.
