Summary
Physicist and professor Carlos Handy was born on October 18, 1950 in Havana, Cuba to a Cuban mother and an American father. His father, W.C. Handy, was known as the "Father of the Blues." Handy graduated from Columbia University in New York City, earning his M.A. degree in physics in 1975, and his Ph.D. degree in theoretical physics in 1978. With a grant from the National Science Foundation, Handy established the Center for Theoretical Studies of Physical Systems, a research and student mentoring center at Clark Atlanta University. In 2005, he left Clark-Atlanta University and became head of the physics department at Texas Southern University where he was responsible for the development of the physics program. Throughout his career, Handy published numerous research articles. He also expressed concern over the quality of physics education and the need for both modern facilities and an early mastery of calculus to enable student learning.
