Summary
Playwright Paul Carter Harrison was born March 1, 1936 in New York City. Harrison graduated from Commerce High School in 1952 and from Indiana University with his B.A. degree in psychology in 1957. From there, he earned his M.A. degree from the New School for Social Research in 1962. He then spent seven years in Spain and the Netherlands, honing his writing and experimenting in ritual theatre. In 1968, he joined the faculty at Howard University, and then taught at the State University of California at Sacramento, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and the Theatre Center of Chicago's Columbia College. His students included Phylicia Rashad, Debbie Allen and Pearl Cleage. His play, The Great McDaddy won an Obie Award in 1973. Harrison's books include The Drama of Nommo and Totem Voices: Plays From the Black World Repertory (1972), and Black Theatre: Ritual Performance in the African Diaspora (2003).
