State legislator Calvin Giles was born on July 10, 1962 in Chicago, Illinois. Giles attended Resurrection Grade School and Holy Trinity High School. He earned his B.A. degree in management from Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago. Giles' involvement in local politics began at an early age while working in the aldermanic offices of his uncle, Percy Giles, alderman of Chicago's 37th Ward. Giles worked on the mayoral campaign of Chicago's first African American Mayor, Harold Washington. In 1993, Giles was appointed to the Illinois House of Representatives, replacing deceased representative, Robert LeFlore. He was then elected to that office in 1994. Sitting on numerous committees, Giles served four terms representing the Eighth District until 2006. He co-sponsored a bill to for the appropriation of $10 million for the construction of a new Oak Park library. Giles received several awards and was named "Legislator of the Year" by the 37th Ward organization.
