Summary
Civil rights activist and entrepreneur Danny Joseph Bakewell, Sr. was born on October 17, 1946 in New Orleans, Louisiana. At the age of twenty-one, Bakewell moved to Los Angeles, California, where he worked as the director of new careers at the University of California, Los Angeles and became involved with the Black Congress. In the early 1970s, he co-founded the National Black United Fund and was named president and chief executive officer of the Brotherhood Crusade, serving until 2006. In 1982, Bakewell became chairman and chief executive officer of The Bakewell Company; in 1986, he was named president of the Cranston Securities Company. Bakewell purchased the Los Angeles Sentinel in 2004 and WBOK radio station in 2007. Bakewell also established the African American Unity Center, the Taste of Soul of Los Angeles, and the SABRIYA's Castle of Fun Foundation. In 2009, he was elected chairman of the National Newspaper Publishers Association.
