SPECIAL COLLECTIONS: Original marbled boards with sheep backstrip. Signed in pencil by Geo. Hancock Griffin, with a note initialed by him on p. 55. Inscribed on title page "Philip St. Geo. Cocke, Cadet U.S. Mil. Acad. West Point, NY 1832." From the Papers of Philip St. George Cocke, MSS 2433. Griffith served as an aide to General Zachary Taylor during the Seminole War, and died in service in 1838. Cocke served in the U.S. Artillery after graduation, then retired in 1834. Later, he served as a brigadier general in the Army of the Confederacy until July 1861, when he committed suicide.
