William Faulkner Collection. From the Library of William Faulkner, with his signature, dated Rowan Oak 19 February 1935. Purchased, 2014. Bart Welling suggests that this "may be the copy referred to by Faulkner in a letter to Harrison Smith (received January 31, 1934). Harrison Smith had invited Faulkner to write an introduction to La condition humaine, to which he replied, 'I don't read French easily enough to do justice to Malraux' book, and I doubt I could write an introduction to anything, anyway. I'll look at the translation if you like, though'" (Bart Welling, "Faulkner's Library Revisited" [Mississippi Quarterly 52.3], p. 414; Joseph Blotner, ed., Selected Letters of William Faulkner [New York: Random House, 1977], p. 78).
