Summary
In this program, presenter Michael J. Mosley reveals the macabre details of reconstructive and cosmetic surgery as he explains how a crude and even life-threatening form of anatomical reconstruction has progressed to become a bona fide science that produces results that are the wonder of the world. Topics include nose replacements in ancient India; the work of the flamboyant Renaissance surgeon Gaspare Tagliacozzi, who developed the Italian Method of rhinoplasty; "wax cancer," paraffinomas-caused by the subcutaneous injection of paraffin-that scarred patients' faces for life; advances in facial reconstruction that came about as a result of World Wars I and II; and progress in the areas of microsurgery and vascular surgery that has made full face transplantation possible. In addition, the world's first female-to-male sex change surgery is examined.
