Algeria [electronic resource]: Country of Single Fares

First Hand Films (Firm)
Format
Video; Computer Resource; Online Video; Online
Summary
Between 1991 and 2004 more than one-hundred thousand Algerians were killed in fighting between local forces and Islamic fundamentalists. During that period, train 1001, making the seven-hour run from Algiers to Oran, was hit by terrorist bomb attacks twenty-five times, killing dozens of people. The ride was so dangerous that passengers only booked one-way fares since return trips were never guaranteed. In this episode we meet the people of Algeria, and hear the story of how radical groups were able to get a stranglehold on such a well-educated population for more than a decade. We hear the frustrations of the train conductor during that period, and the horrific experiences young girls remember. Never more, they say and invite guests to see how their country has changed.
