Summary
At the time the Roman Empire supplanted the failed Republic, the Rhine River marked Rome's northern frontier in western Europe-until Emperor Augustus tried to push the boundary east to the Elbe. Focusing on the events during the 1st through 4th centuries, this program traces the movements of the Goths and the tribes of Germania, including the epic battle in the year 9 when Arminius, leader of the Germanic resistance to Roman colonization, destroyed three Roman legions under Publius Varus-and the emperor's plans for conquest.
