This volume deals with the earliest period of (mostly) German printmaking, and thus, with the Fifteenth century. The prints indexed here are catalogued in the first three volumes of Schreiber's 'Handbuch der Holz- und Metallschnitte des XV. Jahrhunderts'. The prints are reproduced in volumes 161-166 of 'The Illustrated Bartsch'. Almost all the woodcuts dealt with are by anonymous artists. Therefore, following Schreiber, the prints have got a geographical allocation and an approximate dating. Although Schreiber's geographical allocations and datings sometimes seem somewhat questionable, the data are generally accepted. In this respect it should be remembered that the main aim of the 'ICONCLASS Indexes' is to create a detailed iconographic access. Although the compiler of 'The Illustrated Bartsch 161-166', Richard S. Field, called his volumes "German single-leaf woodcuts before 1500", also many woodcuts from other European countries occur.
