Summary
Elizabeth Murray (Author and photographer for the book "Cultivating sacred space: gardening for the soul") presented a slide show illustrating several famous gardens and their tranquil and sacred "spirits." Gardening as a process and/or visual experience can have a profound soothing effects on one's spirit and ability to cope with life's difficulties, sadness, and pain. Ms. Murray illustrated symbolic elements in nature, principles of design, and possibilities for creating healing spaces such as one inner city garden created in Philadelphia. Georgiana McCabe (Owner of Snow Mountain Nursery in Greene County, Virginia) discussed some of the concepts from Elizabeth Murray's book that inspired her. She also described how our view of lawns traces back to the English estates and man's mastery over the land.
