In short entries Towe records his enlistment, balloon training at Fort Omaha (Florence Field), leisure activities, voyage to France, radio and telephone school, camp life, service as radio operator of the 102nd Balloon Company, armistice, and return to the U.S. Events of interest very briefly noted include a Liberty Loan parade, concert by violinist Maud Powell, fatal balloon and gun explosions, escaped balloons, [visits to camp?] by Teddy Roosevelt and John D. Rockefeller, Jr., a wrestling match and football and baseball games and a hike, battle with a submarine, a hanging of a rapist, tossing a chicken out of a balloon, gas drills, armistice, souvenirs from German prisoners, and return home.
The diary is accompanied by Towe's Ballooon School A.E. F. graduation certificate; his embroidered wing and propeller uniform insignia; and two small photographs of balloons, one German, one unidentified.
