Summary
The collection contains general administrative and topical files as well as files pertaining to the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial project "Jefferson's West" and "Television News of the Civil Rights Era, 1950-1970."
Topical files consist primarily of project workbooks and disks produced by the Center for a "civil rights t.v." project. The workbooks contain segment checklists and supporting documentation, chiefly contemporary newsclippings and biographical information for "Virginia's dilemna," a 1954/55 WBDJ Roanoke television series on the desegregation fight that followed the Brown vs. the Board of Education decision. Copies on disk of the original "Virginia's dilemna" broadcasts are included.
Topical files pertinent to Lewis and Clark include a draft of David H. Thomas's "The dead have no rights," a Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation lecture, 2001; financial documents; course descriptions and syllabi; publicity material; faculty colloquium material; website instructions; copies of the 15 poster exhibit "created to examine Thomas Jefferson's vision and the incredible journey of Lewis and Clark," 2002, together with a teacher's guide and CD roms with pertinent images.
There is also a small file of material from a Virginia Festival of the book 2004 panel on "The literary West" and a syllabus for a seminar on Civil Rights in Virginia and U.S. History taught by Will Thomas.
The collection also contains a videocassette of a public television broadcast of a "Ground beneath our feet" segment titled "Virginia fights World War II" with narration by George Gilliam. With this are disks of World War II speeches and radio broadcasts from the National Archives; World War II images including several pertaining to men from Bedford in the 29th Division and to future rector Hovey Dabney; and a recording of F.D.R. giving his "stab in the back" speech at U. Va., all of which were used in the broadcast. The broadcast contains interviews with former rector Hovey Dabney, government professor Alfred Fernbach, and local residents Betsy Tremain and Eugene Williams, as well as D-Day survivor Roy Stevens of Bedford, Va.
The collection also contains a videocassette of a broadcast of a "Ground beneath our feet" segment titled "Massive resistance" with narration by George Gilliam.
