The History Channel ; A&E Television Networks
Format
Video; DVD
Summary
In 1799, French troops near the Egyptian town of Rosetta discovered an ancient basalt slab that would prove to be key to unlocking Egypt's many mysteries. Carved in 196 BC, the Rosetta stone bears a decree given by the Egyptian King Ptolemy V in three different scripts--hieroglyphics, Demotic Egyptian, and Greek. In this program, trace the work of many dedicated scholars who attempted to break the stone's code, and learn the story behind the brilliant Jean-François Champollion who finally made a breakthrough in 1824.
